Article-5: Evidence Based Infection Prevention And Control: Guidelines For Hospital Construction And Renovation

Abstract
Healthcare Associated Infections in healthcare systems worldwide have increased the burden of mortality and financial losses. Activities related to the construction and renovation of healthcare facilities also contribute to the burden of  Healthcare Associated Infections, therefore, before starting the construction and renovation of healthcare facilities, Infection Control and Risk Assessment (ICRA) must be completed. Corrective and preventive actions must be prepared according to the result of the ICRA and implemented. General design aspects such as the provision of adequate and appropriate hand hygiene facilities, materials used for and installation of surfaces and finishes in the healthcare facilities should ensure prevention and control of Healthcare Associated Infections. Specific patient care areas such as OPD, Ward, ICUs, Isolation Facilities and OT along with support areas such as CSSD, Laundry and Kitchen should be designed on the basis of evidence-based guidelines to prevent and control Healthcare Associated Infections.
