Article-1: Reasons Of Refusal For Admission By Patients In Emergency Department

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Despite high rates of patient satisfaction with emergency medicine department (ED) admission acceptance varies widely. Many factors influenced the decision to accept ED admission.

Objective: To assess the factors responsible for refusal for admission by patients or their attendants in emergency department.

Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study was conducted on a sample of 84 patients attending Emergency Medicine Department (ED)at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, Bangalore by using a non probability convenience sampling technique.

Results: Un-affordability of cost of the hospital, improper counseling of patients and their attendants and non-availability of ICU beds/ special ward beds due to full unit were found as major factors responsible for refusal for admission in emergency department.

Conclusion: There is a need and scope to improve the quality of hospital especially for ED by resolving those responsible factors so that the quality of care can be improved.
